I'm Gonna Blame the Pepper Steak!

Yesterday started off pretty "normal". The kids were arguing about what they could eat for breakfast (only in emergencies is chocolate pudding ok) and I knew I had to get going on my favorite crock pot dinner. Not all of these slow-cooker recipes call for throwing things in and enjoy the fabulous smells throughout the day. I had to cut up some garlic and onion and brown the meat. The kids got to playing well in their rooms (Praise The Lord). I hadn't had breakfast yet and I knew I needed to put some kind of sugar in me to keep me from getting dizzy until I could sit down and eat (yeah, cos that ALWAYS happens). I was nibbling on Starburst Jelly Beans as I cooked, and I thanked God that there were some left. Really, it was a miracle that I hadn't eaten BOTH bags yet!!!! On about my 5th jelly bean, something didn't feel right. It was stuck to my back left wisdom tooth (yes, it's in like a normal tooth, so I thought). I flicked the jelly bean with my tongue and along with it came a part of my tooth! There was huge hole in the middle of my tooth and I could feel the nerve exposed!!!! I finished cooking and got a few other things done before I realized it was really bad and I would need help asap. I called Matthew and told him what happened and he got on the phone from work to try and get me an appointment.

I was fighting off the dizzies (still hadn't eaten and at this point, was afraid to) in the kitchen as I made lunch for the kids who were BEGGING for lunch as if they hadn't eaten anything in 24 hours. I managed to stay conscious, thanks to a spoonful of peanut butter. Matthew called back to say I had an appointment in one hour and he was leaving work. The kids were eating and I tried to assemble a big salad. I had a perfectly ripe avocado that I was looking forward to eating for lunch.

Now, I know most of you think I'm pretty tough. That's a common misconception. , but I won't try to convince you otherwise right at this moment. I will assure you that I have weird anxieties about things and getting numb in my mouth ranks in the top 3. There was no way I could go to the dentist alone. Thank God, it is spring break around here. Julie's daughter, Ashley, was able to come babysit and she got here in just a few minutes notice. When we arrived at the dental office, I found out that my 1230 appointment was a 1:00 appointment, but they needed me there early for paperwork. I couldn't believe I was going to have to wait another half hour for relief. Little did I know...... when we got back into an exam room, the conversation wasn't revolving around my emergent situation. It sounded like I was there for a cleaning and they would take a look at the tooth in question. NO WAY would they be able to do a cleaning with the kind of pain I was in. Matthew and I let them know that I needed help ASAP! The dentist took a look and said that there were a couple ways to fix this. A) He could pull the tooth because it isn't really needed (I did say it was a wisdom tooth). I stopped him before he could explain plans B or C. I told him he needed to pull the thing! He agreed to it, but there was a problem. It's spring break and they had no room for this kind of thing. They had us hang out in hopes that someone wouldn't show for an appointment. We waited, for hours and everyone showed up. 4:00 is there last slot for appointments and our last hope. I was in so much pain at this point, I couldn't keep the tears back. I heard several people check in for their 4 o'clock appointments. I guess it was very obvious how discouraged I was, because suddenly the secretary opened the glass window and said "Alexi, I see you're getting nervous. Everyone showed up for their appointments, but the doctor still plans to help you today. Just hang tight". I started crying.... I was so relieved. NEVER before had I wanted my mouth numb so badly!

It seemed to take forever before the dentist was poking my mouth with the best needle ever created at this moment! In about 15 minutes, I was completely numb and the dentist was working hard on yanking the thing out. It took him a long time to get it free. I could feel the pain deep in my jaw and it was pretty bad. He finally got it out and was VERY surprised to see that I had 3 roots to the tooth, instead of the 2 that it should have! This tooth deserved to be yanked. It just wasn't right from the beginning!!!! The dentist put a couple stitches in to help it heal quicker.

We left and hurried home to relieve Ashley. Matthew helped me teach Anika her lesson for the day. It was very obvious to me that early evening is a BAD time for her to learn. 2pm is the perfect time for her and it's best to stick with that. Matthew was impressed with how well she recalled everything. It made for a quick lesson even though she couldn't quit wiggling. Matthew cut up my dinner into tiny bites that I managed to chew and swallow with just one side of my mouth. He got the kids bathed (with a lot of fun thanks to a couple waterproof glow sticks). I did lots of icing and went to bed early.

The day was crazy, but the Lord provided for us big time. My jaw is pretty stiff and sore today, and I'm afraid to eat, but it could be way worse. Oh, and I made granola this morning.... managed to eat some of it with raspberries, YES! My children are driving me nuts already. The weather is going to be very nice today and Ani knows I plan to take them to the park across the street. Let's hope we all make it there in one piece!!!!!

There is SOOOO much I want to say to that whole thing, but I am going to stick with the fact that I have left that world and although the stories I hear never shock me anymore, I am glad you are okay NOW!
ICE ICE ICE, and wet tea bags. The tea bags help with healing and even pain... Anyway, HOPE you are doing well and I'll keep you in my prayers.

Lol, Aubri! I actually thought about calling you first to see if you knew of a good dentist here that took our insurance..... uhm, yeah, cos you know dentists EVERYWHERE we will get stationed! I really can't believe it happened. The dentist told me there was a chance the numbing would put me into labor, because it contains adrenaline. I had to have a note from the OB just for the dentist to even see me. Anyway, I reassured the dentist that my OB would have to evict this child with pitocin, and he could rest assured that I wouldn't go into labor in his office. But wouldn't that have been funny? List of things that can help you go into labor: walks, spicy food, se*, get a tooth pulled..... I'm sure!
